Alfred "Al" H. Simukka, sadly left this world on July 25, 2023, in Astoria, Oregon at the age of 94. Al was born on November 12, 1928, in Naselle WA to Matt and Esther Simukka. Al lived in Naselle until he entered the Air Force during the Korean war, serving his country for 6 years. Al returned to Naselle where he met his future bride, Carolyn Hill. Al and Carolyn were married in Astoria Oregon on January 28, 1956, and enjoyed 61 years of marriage until Carolyn's death on February 22, 2017.
Al was not only a dad, but in our opinion, the best dad in the world - he was patient, loving, with a wicked sense of humor. When you meet his children, his influence is obvious. Al and Carolyn were blessed with three children. Linda (born in 1956), Debbie (born in 1959), and Eric (born in 1964).
Al worked in many industries, including logging, and owning his own television repair business. His love and passion was working for the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, where he had an impactful 30-year career. His career took him from Big Creek Fish Hatchery in Knappa, OR, to Oxbow Fish Hatchery in Cascade Locks, OR, and to Bonneville Fish Hatchery in the beautiful Columbia River Gorge, where he concluded his career as the Maintenance Manager.
After retirement, Al built a home back in Naselle, on the original family farm, nestled along the banks of the Naselle River. Over the years, a wood shop and greenhouses were added, home remodeled, and some of the most beautiful flower beds cultivated. Al's green thumb was well known, particularly for growing tomatoes. Many families and friends were the welcome recipients of Al's tomatoes over the years, with a donation of between 300 to 500 plants each year to be sold as a benefit to his beloved Naselle Lutheran Church.
Al is survived by daughter Debbie (Joe) Jermann of North Bonneville WA, son Eric (Cindy) Simukka of Vancouver WA, Grandchildren Heather (Henry), Craig (Deverie), Kevin, BJ, Tony, Michael, Kyle (Elya) and Shelby (Jordan); Great Grandchildren Deanna, Chelsea (Allen), Jayden, Lanta, Mandy, Christopher, Jacob, Payton, Hazel, Remi, Lake, Owen, and Linda; and Great Great Granddaughter Amelia. Al was preceded in death by his father and mother, Matt and Esther Simukka, brothers Fritz, Ed, and Arvin Simukka; sisters Elsie, Sylvia, Helen, and Mary; wife Carolyn, and daughter Linda.
