Arnie W. Jarvi, 90, died February 23, 2008 at his Deep River, Washington residence. One of 9 children born to Arvid and Selma (Haataia) Jarvi, he was born on Mayger, Oregon on April 2, 1917. His parents were of Finnish ancestry and his father worked in a nearby mill. Arnie received his education in Mayger and as a teenager began gillnetting on the Columbia River. Later he worked at a lumber mill in Westport until it ceased operation. Fifty four years ago he moved to Deep River. There he logged for Wirkkala Brothers before going to work for Weyerhaeuser Timber. Arnie worked in the woods until an on the job injury forced his retirement. Arnie was an active and devout member of the Apostolic Church of Seal River, Washington. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, walks in the nearby woods, the tranquil life along the shores of Deep River and the challenge of jigsaw puzzles. Arnie was blessed with a friendly, out-going personality and a wonderful sense of humor. Family was very important to him and he not only enjoyed his immediate family but staying in touch with members of his extended family as well. He and Edna Kurtti met in Astoria and were married September 1, 1942 in Vancouver, Washington. Their first home was in Mayger. She survives residing in Deep River. Also surviving are daughters Patricia Frazier of Covington, WA, Dorothy Richards of Ilwaco, WA and Marjorie Whitlock of Puyallup, WA; sons Richard Jarvi of Seattle and James Jarvi of Naselle, WA; brother Martin Jarvi of Keyport, WA; sister Berniece Martin of Winlock, WA; 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by sons Willard and Melvin and his siblings. Graveside service will be Saturday, March 1, 2008, 1:00 PM at Seal River Cemetery, Rosburg, Washington.
