Hugh Wood, 85, died January 1, 2008 in a local care home. One of four sons born to Lester and Hazel (Duggan) Wood, he was born in Vancouver, Washington on January 12, 1922. His father was Clark county sheriff and he was killed in the line of duty when Hugh as 4 years old. Hugh attended Vancouver schools, graduated from Fort Vancouver High School and Clark College. He later graduated with a Doctor of Divinity from Southwest Baptist Seminary and also attended Whitworth College and Hardin-Simmons University. Hugh served as a minister at various churches in the greater Vancouver area for many years. He also worked as a carpenter and was a 50 year member of the Carpenter's Union. He was very proud of his carpentry skills. Twenty years ago Hugh moved to the Peninsula. Here he filled in at local churches as needed, ministered with music at funerals, and performed many weddings. Hugh was a gifted musician who shared his considerable talents in various venues. Hugh was an avid fisherman and was very devoted to his family and his faith. His family will remember him as a kind, caring husband and father who was generous to a fault and they rest assured that they will "see him on the other side". Hugh and Wanda Stram were married October 1, 1942 in Vancouver. She survives residing in Long Beach. Also surviving are daughters Dianne (Herb) Milleson of Red Lodge, Montana, Rose (John) Block of Surrey, B.C. Canada, and Cheryl Ruth (Steve) of Nehalem, Oregon; grandchildren Forrest Bickallew, Christian Strickland, John Henry Block, Jacqueline Block, Adam Reeves, Hannah Johnson, and Sadie Sceva; great-grandchildren Janelle and Danielle Buckallew; and many nieces and nephews. Celebration of his life will be held Wednesday, January 9, 2007, 2:00 PM at Penttila's Chapel by The Sea, Long Beach. A reception follows at the chapel.
