Chinook resident Joseph F. "Joe" Schneider, 84, died December 12, 2006 in Portland of injuries received as a result of a fall earlier that day in Chinook. The son of Joseph and Rose (Indlekofer) Schneider, Joe was born December 1, 1922 in Aumsville, Oregon where he grew up and graduated from high school. Joe enlisted in the US Coast Guard in July of 1941 and served until August of 1946. He was stationed in the Aleutian Islands and served aboard an ice breaker. With his military duty complete he settled in Salem, Oregon where he worked as a dairyman and then at a brewery. In 1951 he moved to the Peninsula where he worked for Pacific County as a truck driver. He operated the 101 Cutoff service station east of Long Beach and later operated the Sea Acres Court in Long Beach. In the mid 1960s he purchased a cranberry bog which he operated until retirement in 1987. Joe was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and was a charter member of Long Beach Elks 1937. He enjoyed hunting and card games, especially cribbage. On October 4, 1945 he married Shirley Osborne in Astoria. She died in October of 2005. Surviving are a son Steven Schneider and wife Janet of Ilwaco and grand dog Lucky. A gathering to honor Joe's life will be held Saturday, January 6, 2007 at his residence in Chinook.
