Michael W. (Mike) Herman, 58, lifelong resident of the Long Beach Peninsula, died suddenly August 15, 2007 at our local hospital. Mike was born November 10, 1948 in Portland, OR to William and Margaret (Hamilton) Herman Sr. One of nine children, he attended Chinook Grade School and Ilwaco High School where he played football. The family lived near Megler by the ferry dock, before and while the Astoria Bridge was being built. On December 13, 1969 he married Janet Schuyler in Long Beach. She survives him. Mike worked as a Long Beach City Policeman for four years, then worked as a truck driver before being hired by the State Dept of Transportation and retired from there after twenty-nine years on the job. For the past eight years he started his firewood business. He enjoyed doing cords of wood for special customers to keep them warm and delivering bundles of wood to stores and RV Parks in the area. The family will continue the firewood legacy in his honor. Mike played men's softball and later coached the Chico's Pizza woman's softball team for many years. He love to hunt and fish, as well as camping with friends and family during elk season. A favorite pastime was having coffee with his buddies. Mike was active in the Grace Family Fellowship in Seaview and where he loved being involved with and leading the worship singing team. In addition to his wife of 37 years, Mike is survived by daughters Paula Herman of Long Beach and Tammy (Steve) Long of Mississippi; brothers Paul Weitzel of Florida, Dennis (Debbie) Herman of Bellevue, WA, Billy (Tami) Herman of Long Beach, Ronnie (Lori) Herman of Long Beach; sisters Barbara (Lee) Wolf of Nemah, WA Patsy (Stan) Black of Castle Rock, WA and Joanie (Greg) Rekart of South Bend, WA; grandchildren Seth and Whitleigh Long as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was proceeded in death by his brother Donald Herman and Donald's daughter Donnie. Mike also had his extended family Jerry & Gloria Schuyler of Fresno, CA and Nancy & Jack Gulden of Long Beach; his "chosen" family – Miss Vivian Upward of Long Beach, John and Jan Willard of Long Beach, Alma Davis of Vancouver, WA and Don & Sue Sanna of Longview, WA as well as his wonderful church family at Grace Family Fellowship. He had so many "special" friends, neighbors, hunting and fishing buddies that he loved very muchAnd the most recent children that the Lord brought to Mike and his family are Randy and Rea Wynn & their family. A memorial service will take place this Saturday, August 25, 2007 at 2:00 PM at the Grace Family Fellowship in Seaview. A reception will follow.
