Marietta C. Patterson, 97, died April 24, 2007 in Vancouver, Washington where she had resided the past 7 years. Born June 18, 1909 in Portland, Oregon, she was the daughter of Josias and Mary (Reeder) Crumbley. Her mother was a decendent of the Reeder familiy, pioneer settlers of Sauvie Island, located at the confluence of the Columbia and Willamette rivers. Marietta grew up in southeast Portland and graduated from Commerce (now Cleveland) High School. In 1928 she married Richard H. Grolbert and continued living in Portland. They divorced in 1940 and that year Marietta moved to Long Beach, Washington. Soon after she met and married Charles "Chuck" Patterson. During the war years Marietta worked at the Long Beach liquor store and drove taxi. With the war over she concentrated on being a wife and homemaker. In 1964 she and Chuck moved to Moclips, Washington. Marietta was a member of the Presbyterian Church where she later served as an elder. She was a long standing member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the 40 et 8, also a veteran's organization. She continued living in Moclips until moving to Vancouver 7 years ago to be near family Marietta enjoyed knitting, crocheting, sewing, ceramics, clamming and her many years of life at the coast. Independent and strong willed, she was also a caring person who loved her family, her dogs and cats. Her husband Chuck Patterson died in 1989. Surviving are son Richard E. Grolbert of Portland, OR; grandchildren Richard L. Grolbert, Terrie Heer and Tammie Taylor; 2 great-grandsons and 5 great-great grandchildren. Five siblings died earlier. Graveside rites will be Saturday, May 5, 2007, 3:00 PM at Ilwaco Cemetery, Ilwaco, Washington.
