OBITUARY OF ORVILLE EUGENE "Audie" NELSON Warrenton resident Orville E. "Audie" Nelson, 78, died June 9, 2008 in Long beach, Washington. Born February 15, 1930 in Pueblo, Colorado, he was the son of Lawrence and Esther (McClure) Nelson. Audie was a Veteran of the United States Navy, having served 4 years during the Korean War. While in the Navy he was a boxer and pursued his love of the sport as an exhibition fighter in California. Following his military duty he was a "Teamster" and then in the early 1960s moved to the Astoria area. Audie fished commercially on the Columbia River for the next 40 years on his bowpicker "Noontime", fishing up until two years ago when he retired. He married Lillian Barbara Stevens and they were parents of three children: sons Audi E. Nelson of Jupiter, FL and David L. Nelson of Decatur, IL; and daughter Tammie R. Nelson of Missoula, MT. Also surviving are four grandchildren Abbey Mae Vranizan, Ryan and Katlyn Shaffer, and David Nelson Jr. His companion of the past 10 years, Bobbi Hill of Warrenton; his step-father and fishing mentor Jack "Champ" Rubino; brothers Vince, Jack and Ron Rubino all of Astoria and sister Connie Rubino. He was preceded in death by sisters Darlene, Barbara and Shirley and his wife Lillian who died in 1995. His family will cherish the memories of his delightful sense of humor. He was very loved and will be missed dearly. He has crossed the bar to a place higher than here and his spirit will forever flow like the mighty Columbia River he fished on.
