Former Ilwaco resident Pauline E. Bargquist, 79, died July 13, 2007 in Bellevue, Washington. The daughter of George and Anna (Bacon) Bargquist, she was born in Rocklin, California on April 11, 1928. She lived in California until she entered high school. That is when she moved to Ilwaco where she lived with her aunt Pauline May. She graduated from Ilwaco High School in 1946. Following high school Pauline attended the University of Washington, graduating in 1953 with a master's degree in social work. Out of college she worked for Child Welfare Services of Santa Barbara, California. Moving back to Seattle she worked 12 years for Medina Children's Services as a counselor and supervising children in foster homes. Moving to Spokane she became executive director of the Lutheran Family and Child Services of Washington. Her final job was as a counselor at the U.S. Veterans Administration Hospital in Portland from which she retired. Pauline was very proud of her Finnish family heritage and actively pursued family genealogy. She enjoyed traveling, folk music, dancing, knitting and sewing. Annual trips to the Shakespearean Festival in Ashland, Oregon were eagerly anticipated as were symphony concerts. In younger years she enjoyed hiking and snow skiing. She was an active member of St. Luke Lutheran Church in Portland and was a longtime volunteer at the Pittock Mansion in Portland. She moved to Bellevue four years ago to be near family. Pauline is survived by nephews Blane and Joel Saunders, nieces Ann (Dale) Tracy and Paula (Ed) Reagor; cousins Marilyn Durham and Gordon (Irene) Simmons; and other members of her extended family. Graveside service will be Saturday, July 28, 2007, 2:00 PM at Ilwaco Cemetery followed by a memorial service, 3:00 PM at Penttila's Chapel by The Sea, Long Beach. A reception follows at the chapel. Another memorial service will be held at her home church in Portland on August 24, 2007.
