Pauline Haavisto

March 18, 1910 — February 29, 2008

Pauline Curry Haavisto, 97, died February 29, 2008 in Long Beach with family at her side. The eldest of seven children born to Rochus and Helena (Dietrich) Steiner, she was born March 18, 1910 in Saint Joseph's, North Dakota, a small community near Glen Ullin. Pauline grew up on the family farm south of Richadton, moving to Bismarck at age 11. Pauline continued residing in North Dakota until 1938 when she moved to Yakima, Washington. In 1953 she moved to the Peninsula, settling in Ilwaco where she was a homemaker and also owned and operated the Trade Winds Tavern in downtown Ilwaco for 15 years. Pauline's primary interest was her family and she also enjoyed crocheting and needlework of which she was justifiably proud. Her gardening, flowers and greenhouse were summertime pursuits as was following the Seattle Mariners baseball team. Of particular interest to her was listening to the music of and attending Lawrence Welk Orchestra concerts, he being a North Dakota native like Pauline. Pauline was able to see her two daughters celebrate their fiftieth wedding anniversaries. Pauline married Fred Curry in 1931 and he preceded her in death in 1959. In 1964 she married J. T. "Ted" Haavisto and he died in 1992. Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law Dick and Linda Curry; daughters and son-in-laws Helen and Art Beehler and Eva and Harry Noonan; grandchildren Kevin Curry, Steven (Amy) Curry, Sharon (Mike) McKay, David Beehler, Kathleen (Rod) Gish and Vince (Andrea) Noonan; great-grandchildren Rebecca Curry, Alaina Curry, Julie (Brandon) Hoyle, Michael and Christopher McKay, Brian Gish and Jennifer Noonan. Funeral service will be Thursday, March 6, 2008, 11:00 AM at Penttila's Chapel by The Sea, Long Beach, with a reception following at the chapel. Graveside rites follow at Ilwaco Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Ilwaco Fire Department, PO Box 342, Ilwaco, WA 98624. The guestbook is available at www.penttilaschapel.com.
