Paul Pine

South Bend resident Paul E. Pine Jr., 70, died February 12, 2008 in Long Beach. Born April 8, 1937 in Oregon City, Oregon, he was the eldest child born to Paul and Jean (Boyer) Pine Sr. Paul's early years were spent in Oregon City before moving with his family to Bay Center, Washington as a teenager. In 1954 at age 17 Paul joined the United States Army where he served for 25 years until October 1, 1979. Paul was a Sergeant First Class assigned to Army Intelligence. He was stationed at Fort Richardson, Alaska for the majority of his service and also served two tours of duty in both Vietnam and Germany. Following his military duty he settled in Vancouver, Washington where he managed a glass company. Wishing to return to his roots, he then located to Bay Center. There he was self-employed as a procurer of natural forest products. He picked ferns, salal, mushrooms, pine cones and tree bark and enjoyed all the wonderful times spent in the local woodlands. Paul was an avid fisherman and hunter. In past years he played softball, dug clams commercially while living in Alaska, and while stationed in Germany took part in numerous "volks marches"—6 and 12 mile walks which he chose to run. Throughout his life he placed a priority on family. He helped raise his younger siblings and then was the firm hand while raising his children. He and Dixie Lee Wooten were married February 21, 1958 in Palmer, Alaska. She survives residing in Ilwaco. Also surviving are sons Charles Pine of South Bend, WA, Paul Pine III of Astoria, Ricky Pine of Vancouver, WA and Shawn Pine of South Bend; brother Eddie Pine of Vancouver; sisters June Klanchnek of Camas, WA, Peggy Klanchnek of Vancouver, and Jill Stone of Fairbanks, AK; 12 grandchildren, two of whom resides in Germany; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother Leslie and daughter Eve Renee Bowen. Celebration of his life will be held Saturday, February 23, 2008, 1:00 PM at Penttila's Chapel by The Sea, Long Beach. A potluck reception follows at the Surf Pine Apts in Ilwaco from 1-4 PM. Concluding services with full military honors will be held at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland.
