Alice J. Sund, Ph.D., died March 28, 2008, in Rohnert Park, Calif., where she had resided for the past 21 years. She was born on June 11, 1943, in Ilwaco to Adolph and Helene Sund She graduated from Ilwaco High School as valedictorian of her class and went on to graduate from the University of Washington in 1965 with a bachelor's degree in science education. She moved to California and began a career in education at the Bennington High School in Los Angeles; she taught there from 1965 to 1978. She received her master's degree in education in 1969, pupil personnel credential in 1972, and Doctorate of Philosophy in 1977, all from the University of California Berkeley. While furthering her education, she maintained the position of head counselor at San Ramon Valley High School in Danville, Calif., from 1978-87 and from 1987 to 1998 held the position of assistant principal for curriculum and instruction at Casa Grande High School in Petaluma, Calif. Even after her retirement she remained involved in education as freshman application reviewer for UC Berkeley from 2002-07. Ms. Sund really believed in getting an excellent education and saw to it that her high school students had the necessary requirements at graduation to go on and pursue a college education. She even helped many young people after her retirement. She is a great loss to education and will be terribly missed by her family and friends. Survivors include her sisters, Brenda Darling of Poulsbo and Cissie Smith of Severn, Md., several nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews and cousins that loved her dearly. She will be taken home to Ilwaco and a memorial service will be held there.
