JoAnne H. Rice

January 30, 1935 — July 31, 2008

Ocean Park resident JoAnne Hesse Rice, 73, died July 31, 2008 in Ilwaco. JoAnne was born to Merle F. and Dorothy M. Hesse on January 30, 1935, in Ballard, Washington. She was a graduate of both Ballard High School and the University of Washington where she was a scholarship student majoring in Business Administration and a member of the Alpha Delta Phi Sorority. It was during her years at the University that she met her future husband, Keith J. Rice, of Kahlotus, Washington. They married on June 23, 1956, in Seattle, Washington where they settled down and started their family. In 1968 Keith, JoAnne, and their three children moved to the Bothell, Washington area, where they shared ownership in Ostrom's Drugstore, a longtime fixture in the Kenmore Village Shopping Center. During these years JoAnne especially enjoyed the time spent with her family at their summer home on Whidbey Island on the shores of Puget Sound. In the winter of 1976, JoAnne married Francis X. "Jake" Moesh in Anchorage, Alaska. They divided their time in the ensuing years between their homes in Seattle, Anchorage, and Palm Springs, California. JoAnne and Jake also traveled extensively during this period, and particularly enjoyed time spent in Central and South America. JoAnne moved to Southwest Washington in 1990, where she made her home on the Long Beach Peninsula. She felt instantly embraced by the Long Beach community, and took great pleasure in the warmth of the people and the beauty of the surroundings. JoAnne was a keen observer of nature and was endlessly fascinated by the animals that made their homes on the land surrounding her "house in the woods." JoAnne was a woman of unconditional love and kindness, and she will always be cherished and celebrated by those who've loved her so dearly. She is survived by her three children, Andrew T. Rice of Redmond, Washington; Julie K. Kaynor of Lake Oswego, Oregon; and Jay K. Rice of Gladstone, Oregon, and her eight grandchildren. JoAnne had requested that no service be held. Remembrances may be made to the South Pacific County Humane Society, PO Box 101, Long Beach, Washington 98631. The guestbook is available at www.penttilaschapel.com.
