Joanne Pfeifer, 73, died September 25, 2008 at her Long Beach residence. Born in Burley, Idaho on June 30, 2008, she was one of eight children born to Austin and Bernice (Biggs) Harwood. The family came west to Vancouver where Joanne attended Hazel Dell elementary and graduated from Fort Vancouver High School. Joanne became a wife, mother and homemaker while residing in the Vancouver area. Her working career centered around the health care field where she was a nursing aide and dispatcher. In 1988 she relocated to the Peninsula where she worked at Ocean Beach Hospital until retiring in 1998. Joanne was a member of Ocean Park Moose lodge. She enjoyed the challenge of crossword puzzles and trips to Reno and Spirit Mountain. A talented seamstress, she enjoyed making clothes for her grandchildren. In 1998 she married Wesley "Smokey" Pfeifer. He survives, residing at the family home in Long Beach. Also surviving are sons Billy Carpenter and Mike Carpenter both of LaCenter, WA, John Carpenter of Vancouver, WA, and Dick Smith of Woodland, WA; 10 grandchildren; brother Mike Harwood of Vancouver; sisters Bonnie Campbell and Renee Harrocks both of Vancouver, Joyce Cromemiller of Salem, OR; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three siblings. Joanne had requested that no formal service be held.
