William Ray Young

October 28, 1946 — January 7, 2009

William R. Young, 62, died at his Ocean Park residence on January 7, 2009. The son of Sy and Lillie (Pulse) Young, he was born in Kerman, California on October 28, 1946. Following his father's death, Bill was raised by his grandparents Walt and Stella Covington. Initially they resided in Tranquility, California before moving to Port Orford, Oregon. Bill graduated from Port Orford High School and then enlisted in the United States Army. He was shipped off to Vietnam for 13 months, from December 1964 until January 1966. On May 1, 1980 he married Susan McKenzie and they established their residence in Goldendale, Washington. Twenty seven years ago they moved to the Peninsula, residing in Ilwaco before settling in Ocean Park in 2001. Bill cut and sold firewood for 15 years. He then purchased a saw mill and cut lumber. After moving to the Peninsula he operated Rustic Makins which made natural edged clocks and tables. He was a member of Peninsula Baptist Church. Bill enjoyed wood working, family activities and his children. Instead of taking his youngest son to a babysitter, he took him wood cutting with him. Besides his wife Susan who resides in Ocean Park, Bill is survived by children William Young Jr. of Ocean Park, Samantha Young of Salem, OR, W. Joshua Young of Auburn, WA and Kevin M. O'Connor (Angela) of Caldwell, Idaho; sisters Janie McCormack (Bobby) of Big Spring, Texas, Helen of Redding, California and Wanda (Sonny) of Fresno, CA; grandchildren Tyler and Brianna Young, Gavin Young, Chris and Adoniah Joy O'Connor and Cody Zinke-Young; cousin Virginia (Dee) Botica; and best friends Steve and Jewell Schofield. He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, sister LaVena and son Samuel Sy Carl Young. A celebration of his life will be held at Peninsula Baptist Church in Ocean Park at 11 AM on Wednesday, January 28, 2009. Memorials may be made to the National Kidney Foundation, 30 East 33rd Street, New York, New York 10016. The guestbook is available at www.penttilaschapel.com.
