Oswald "Ossie" Steiner, 79, died peacefully February 18, 2009 at his Ocean Park residence. The son of Oswald Wihelm and Minna Gretchen (Peters) Steiner, he was born in Cottbus, Brandenburg, Germany on June 1, 1929. He completed his furniture making apprenticeship in Germany following World War II and immigrated to the United States in 1953. He received his citizenship in Buffalo, New York in 1958. In the fall of 1965 he settled on the Peninsula. He made his living as a cabinetmaker and carpenter and served as building inspector for the City of Ilwaco for a number of years. Always one to help people, Ossie served 23 years of volunteer service to Fire District No. 1. He served as a firefighter, assistant chief under Bob Whitten and later as a captain, training officer and paramedic with advanced cardiac life certification. Ossie was a member of the Peninsula Model Railroad Club and enjoyed the outdoors and wildlife on the Peninsula. Ossie is survived by his partner of 22 years, Eileen Weidner of Ocean Park; daughters Karin Darwood and husband Dan of Sweet Home, Oregon and Betty Palmrose and husband Vern of Clatskanie, Oregon; stepsons Wolfgang Mack and wife Christl of Ocean Park and Gunther Mack and wife Andrea of Ocean Park. Also surviving from his extended family with Eileen are daughter Tamara Meyer and husband Paul of Ocean Park; sons Thomas Weidner and wife Heather of Ocean Park and Max Weidner II of Ocean Park; 26 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; sisters Betty Mezger and Vroni Menz and husband Horst of Germany; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sisters Burkhilda Priebe abd Barbara Heinzelmann and grandchildren Michael Weidner and Felica Weidner. A celebration of his life will be held at the Peninsula Senior Center in Klipsan Beach on Wednesday, February 25, 2009 from 7 until 9 PM.
