Chinook, Washington resident Eileen B. Nyberg, 86, died in Astoria, Oregon on March 2, 2009. Born in Chinook on September 29, 1922, she was the last surviving child born to David Williams, a Welsh immigrant, and Hilda Erlandson, a Swedish immigrant. Eileen grew up in Chinook where she attended grade school and graduated from Ilwaco High School in 1940. She and her high school sweetheart Berwyn Nyberg were married in San Diego, California while he was serving with the US Navy during World War II. The couple initially lived for a time in Ilwaco before moving back to Chinook where Eileen has resided ever since. She was a devoted wife, mother, homemaker and friend to many. Eileen was a lifelong member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Chinook. She enjoyed staying in touch with members of her extended family, friends from her childhood and was especially devoted to her grandchildren. Fourth of July picnics, Williams' family gatherings and the annual Ilwaco High School reunion every August were highlights. Affectionately known as "Aunt Neeny" by her nieces, nephews, neighbors and friends, Eileen was a true people person. She also enjoyed traveling and made a trip to Europe in 1980. Eileen is survived by sons Joe (Sherry) Nyberg of Bellingham, WA and Bob (Jerri) Nyberg of Sand Point, Alaska; grandchildren Lindsay Nyberg of Seattle, Eric Nyberg of Bellingham, Julia Nyberg of Chinook, Hilary Nyberg of Flagstaff, Arizona and Erin (Arlin) Galovin and their children Arlin Jr. and Keira Galovin all of Sand Point, Alaska; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Berwyn; brothers Robert, Ervin and Howard Williams; sisters Helen Tetz, Eleanor Bacon, Mildred Guggisberg and Ella Gottberg. Memorial service will be Saturday, March 7, 2009, 1:00 PM at the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Chinook. A reception follows at the church. Private burial will be at Ilwaco Cemetery. Memorials may be made to either the Friends of Chinook School or the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Chinook memorial fund in care of Penttila's Chapel by The Sea, PO Box 417, Long beach, WA 98631.
