Gail Schenk

Gail H. Schenk, 89, died March 25, 2009 at her Ilwaco residence. Born in Seattle, Washington on October 2, 1919, she was the daughter of Bruce and Gail (Smith) Tyrell. After graduating from high school she attended Oregon State University. She married Herman D. Schenk on September 7, 1939. While residing in Portland, Gail was employed as a licensed practical nurse at Good Samaritan Hospital for a number of years. Later she was parish secretary at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Portland. Gail was a summer resident of the Peninsula for many years. In 1966 she and Herman moved to Ilwaco where for 25 years they operated Columbia Bar Charters. Gail then moved to Boulder City, Nevada where she resided until moving back to Portland. In January of this year she returned to Ilwaco. Gail enjoyed knitting, crocheting, reading, and pinochle. She also enjoyed talking politics, trips to casinos, and spending time with her family. Gail is survived by sons Daniel Schenk of Portland, Michael Schenk and wife Jeanie of Tucson, AZ, Patrick Schenk and wife Vicki of Ilwaco and Christopher Schenk of Portland; daughter Randi O'Phelan of Ilwaco; 11 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Her husband Herman died in June of 2008. At her request no service will be held. Memorials may be made to either the South Pacific County Humane Society or Harbors Home Health and Hospice in care of Penttila's Chapel by The Sea, PO Box 417, Long Beach, WA 98631.
