Long Beach resident William R. "Bill" Tubbs, 74, died at his home on April 7, 2009. Bill was born on January 9, 1935 in Kansas City, Missouri, the only child of James and Mildred (Carey) Tubbs who preceded him in death. He and his wife Karen Campbell moved to the Peninsula in 1989 from San Francisco, California. In his early years Bill traveled with his parents who were vaudeville performers. When he began school he lived with an extended family of grandparents, aunts and uncles. He was active in Scouting and received the Eagle Scout rank. He attended the University of Missouri receiving a Bachelors degree in philosophy and English. He worked in journalism and marketing and owned his own market research company in San Francisco. Scuba diving was a passion of Bill's and this led him to work as an investigative reporter and assistant editor of "Undercurrent" a diving magazine. He was currently employed as a library clerk at the Timberland Library in Ocean Park. A McDonald Clan member, he taught and played the bag pipes for many years and was a life-time member of the St. Andrews Society. He was also a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity, Ocean Park Moose, Occident Masonic lodge #99 F.&A.M. of Ilwaco and the Peninsula Ham Radio Club. Bill is survived by his wife Karen; children Scott Wallace, Laura McLean, Sean Wallace; and 8 grandchildren. Memorial service was held April 11th at Penttila's Chapel by The Sea in Long Beach.
