Vernona S. Halstead, 89, died at her residence at Golden Sands Assisted Living in Klipsan Beach on April 11, 2009. The daughter of Clark and Verna (Turner) Stewart, she was born in Chemawa, Oregon on January 15, 1920. Later she moved with her family to Minot, North Dakota where she attended grade and high school before the family returned to Salem, Oregon where her father was employed for the Oregon State Department of Agriculture. Vernona moved to Portland where she attended Multnomah School of the Bible. There she met Rev. Herbert Halstead and they married on December 7, 1945. The couples first home was in Kirkland, Washington. While Vernona stayed busy as a wife, mother and homemaker, Herbert ministered at churches such as Calvary Baptist in Hillsboro, Oregon, Helvetica Community Church and Bethany Baptist in Aloha, Oregon. Following her husband's death Vernona settled in Portland before moving to Klipsan Beach in October of 2003. There she attended Peninsula Baptist Church and enjoyed the many activities at Golden Sands. Vernona was always proud of being a twin, who preceded her in death, and she took note that her mother, too, was a twin. Survivors include her younger sister Marceil Morey of Salem, Oregon; sons Paul Halstead of Ocean Park, David Halstead of Vancouver, and Mark Halstead of Portland; 7 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. A celebration of her life will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made to Harbors Home Health and Hospice. The guestbook is available at www.penttilaschapel.com.
