Former Long Beach resident Evelyn M. "Connie" Starr, 84, died in Seattle on September 26, 2009. Connie married Roy Starr and in 1948 they settled on the Peninsula, joining her parents, the Conto's as well as her grandfather E.W. Harris, operating Sunset Grocery in north Long Beach. There Connie and Roy operated the meat market. Later Roy's Market opened in downtown Long Beach, located where Anna Lena's fabric store is now located. Connie was a long time member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Chinook. She was an avid golfer and member of the Astoria Golf and Country Club as well as the Surfside and Long Beach golf clubs. Additionally, Connie enjoyed following sporting events. In past years she closely followed her 3 sons as they played sports for the Ilwaco Fishermen and then 30 years later when her grandchildren Kandi and Dustin also were Fishermen. Connie is survived by sisters June Wright and Doris Mae McMillian; sons Sid, Lynn and Mike Starr; grandchildren Amy, Matt, Heather, Tammy, Paul, Kandi and Dustin; 11 great-grandchildren; and other members of her extended family. She was preceded in death by her husband Roy, brother Chuck Conto and grandson Matt Starr. Memorial service will be held Saturday, October 3, 2009, 1:00 PM at the Peninsula Church Center in Seaview with a reception following. Private committal will be at Lone Fir Cemetery, Long Beach.
