Long Beach resident Della M. Osborn, 83, died September 28, 2009 in Astoria. The last surviving child born to Walter and Barbara (Law) Sunderland, she was born July 17, 1926 on the family farm near Vermillion, Kansas. Della was raised in Vermillion and during the week lived in near by Summerfield where she attended and graduated from high school, returning home on the weekends. On May 2, 1946 she married James M. "Mike" Settles. He was serving in the US Air Force at the time and they lived stateside and in France until he completed his military duty in 1956. At that time Mike and Della settled in Denver, Colorado where Della began working for Montgomery Ward Co. in the credit history department. Having visited the Peninsula on fishing trips, Della and Mike moved to Long Beach in 1980. After moving to the Peninsula Della and her husband purchased the local Montgomery Ward catalogue agency which they operated until 1985. Mike died that year. In 1988 Della married Jack Osborn and together they operated Osborn Glass Co. in Long Beach until retirement. She and Jack enjoyed being snow birds to Yuma, Arizona during the winters. Jack played in a local band and Della was instrumental in inaugurating jam sessions and potlucks at the local retirement parks in the Yuma area. During her life Della enjoyed fishing, cooking, canning, music and dancing. Besides her husband Jack of Long Beach, Della is survived by her son James Settles of Conifer, Colorado; daughter Donna Settles of Vancouver, WA; 2 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her 8 siblings. Committal service will be held at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, Oregon on Tuesday, October 5, 2009 at 1:00 PM.
