Ilwaco resident Samuel A. "Sam" Quillin, 65, died October 23, 2009 in Portland, Oregon. The son of Carl A. and Alline (McBride) Quillin, he was born in Holdenville, Oklahoma on January 2, 1944. Four years after his birth he moved with his family to Coos Bay, Oregon in a taxi cab as that was his father's occupation at the time. He received his education in area schools and graduated from Marshfield High School in 1962. In 1965 he enlisted in the US Army where he served for two years. Sam was employed as a lineman for first GTE, Contel and then Verizon Telephone until retirement in 2000 after 32 year of service. He and Marlene Burrell met in 1994 and they moved to the Peninsula in 2000 from Burlington, Washington Sam was a member of the Church of Latter-Day Saints, the National Rifle Association and the American Legion. Sam was a true outdoorsman at heart. He enjoyed hiking, hunting and fishing. He was an experienced marksman who was always working to perfect his shot grouping; hand loaded his own ammunition, and had many wonderful hiking and hunting adventures with his good friends Ben and Lance Booher. Sam loved photography and took many photos of local events, weddings, scenery and places he visited along with family and friends. He also enjoyed country western and rock and roll music which brought him pleasure. Blessed with a great sense of humor, he was honest, straight forward and a genuinely good man. Besides his spouse, Sam is survived by his father Carl and step-mother Jane Quillin of Holdenville, OK; mother Alline and step-father Tom Jackson of Mapleton, OR; children and their spouses Monte (Alicia) Quillin of Salt Lake City, UT, Tajee (Brandon) Pugh of Redmond, WA and Kristene (Wally) Stephens of Salt Lake City, UT; brother Randy (Linda) Quillin of Ten Mile, OR; sister Carlene (Jim) Holmes of Myrtle Point, OR; grandchildren Finn McQuillin, Curtis Pugh, Trevor Pugh and Drake Samuel Stephens; and numerous other members of his extended family. Family and friends gathered to celebrate his life on October 26, 2009 at Penttila's Chapel by The Sea in Long Beach with a reception following.
