Jack L. McNeal, 84, known to many as "Hobo Jack", died peacefully at his Chinook residence on March 8, 2010 surrounded by family. The son of Harry and Martha (Hawley) McNeal, Jack was born in Washington City, Kansas on March 1, 1926. Jack served with the US Navy during World War II. On December 19, 1945 he married Mary Dennis and they established their home in South Seattle. For the past 40 years, the Peninsula was Jack's home. Jack owned and operated the charter boat "Hobo" for over 30 years, fishing out of the Port of Ilwaco. Hobo Jack took great pride in his fishing skills and his bright yellow vessel was hard to miss while plying local waters. In his spare time Jack enjoyed hunting and walking. His wife Mary died earlier. Survivors include his sons Jack McNeal of Burien, WA and Chuck McNeal and wife Frankie of Chinook; daughters Kathy Quinlan and husband Jack of Port Orchard, WA and Jannette Peterson and husband Al of Renton, WA; ten grandchildren; twenty great-grandchildren and one great-great grandson. On Saturday, May 1, 2010 a "walk through memorial" will be held for Jack at the Pacific Salmon Charter office at the Port of Ilwaco. His family invites his many friends to enjoy the kiddie parade, blessing of the fleet and visit with them at Jack's memorial.
