Michael William Hawkins

January 11, 1954 — June 12, 2010

Ocean Park, Washington resident Michael W. Hawkins, 56, died suddenly in Ilwaco, Washington on June 12, 2010. The son of James and Joan (Treelevin) Hawkins, he was born January 11, 1954 in Barstow, California. The family moved to Burien, Washington where Mike attended Highline High School where he enjoyed playing varsity football. Growing up, Mike was especially close to his grandparents and his sister Cindy. Following high school Mike attended Central Washington University in Ellensburg before he began his career in juvenile rehabilitation with the State of Washington. Over his years of working with troubled children and teens with a criminal history, Mike changed countless lives with his friendship and support. Additionally, he introduced many in his care to the beliefs and practices of his Native American ancestry and these too influenced many. In 2001 Mike moved to Ocean Park from Seattle. He was currently employed as a program manager at the Naselle Youth Camp where he cherished many friendships. Mike enjoyed photography, the outdoors, quality time with his family, the seashore, and music, being an avid guitar player. He generously gave of his time with others and was especially close to his children and grandchildren with whom he shared countless adventures. He was active locally with the Chinook Tribe. He and Marie Tuft were married in August 20, 1999. She survives residing in Ocean Park. Also surviving are his mother Joan Hawkins of Burien, WA; sister Cindy Sewell of Burien; children Stacey Townsen, Josh Townsen, Michael Wiest, Melissa Wiest, Ryan Hawkins, and Keegan Hawkins; grandchildren Makayla, J. R. and Riley Townsen; Blake, Emilie and Tyler Wiest; Kristina Wiest and Shyann Golliher; and Megan and Michael Sewell. He was preceded in death by his father Jim Hawkins. Memorial service was held June 19, 2010 at Penttila's Chapel by The Sea in Long Beach. An additional memorial will be held Saturday, June 26, 2010, 2:00 PM at the First Assembly of God in Burien, WA.
