Donald E. Fowler, 91, died July 21, 2010 in Long Beach where he had resided the past year. A native of Hoquiam, Washington, Don was the son of Chester and Luella (Crone) Fowler and his birth date was July 19, 1919. Don was a 1937 graduate of Napavine (WA) High School. On a "day that will live in infamy", December 7, 1941 Don married Gretchen Coyle at the First Baptist Church in Centralia, Washington. Less than a month later, in January of 1942, he entered service with the U.S. Navy, received training in sonar, and served his country until November of 1945 when he was honorably discharged with the rank of chief petty officer. Following his military service Don returned to school at Lower Columbia College in Longview, graduated from the University of Washington with a bachelor's degree and later a master's degree, was a Ford Foundation Fellow in 1953-54, and also attended Columbia University and Stanford University. From 1948 until retirement in 1982 Don served as a teacher, counselor, vice principal, principal and assistant administrator at school districts in Spokane, Marysville, Vancouver, and Federal Way, Washington. His entire career was spent in education and involved with students. Additionally, Don was a 35 year member of the Lions Club in Federal Way, a 15 year member of Federal Way Youth and Family Services and was also active in other community events and activities. Several nieces and nephews survive. No formal service will be held. Private inurnment will be at the Napavine Cemetery next to his wife Gretchen.
