Grays River, Washington resident David J. Maki, 58, died of natural causes on November 27, 2010 while aboard his fishing vessel Jennie which was moored at the Warrenton, Oregon boat basin. The son of Emil and Shirley (Sell) Maki he was born in Ilwaco, Washington on September 14, 1952. He was a 1971 graduate of Ilwaco High School. Early on David followed in the footsteps of his father by helping him fish. During high school he began trolling the F/V Cheryl Ann. By 1973 he was trolling off the Oregon and Washington coast aboard the F/V Nile II. Later he fished Alaska and Northern California as a high-line crabber, purse seiner and troller. In the off-season David worked various jobs around Ilwaco where he was a member of the Ilwaco Volunteer Fire Department and also a member of Occident Masonic Lodge No. 99 F&AM. David enjoyed hunting, fishing, cutting and splitting firewood. He was known for his fish smoking skills, a bounty often shared with family and friends. He also enjoyed reading Pacific Northwest history and relating stories with a mischievous twinkle in his eyes. David was a hard worker who was well respected by those who knew him. David was married twice. He and Cathy Stewart were married in 1975 and were parents of a daughter Jennie and Dave was step-father to sons Ken and Ed Borders. In 1986 he married Diane Hanson Rogers and he became step-father to sons Paul and Joe Rogers. Besides his spouse Diane of Grays River, David is survived by his daughter Jennie Johnson and husband Russell; grandchildren Zachary, Keegan, Luke and Elsie; step-sons Ken and Ed Borders and Paul and Joe Rogers; sister Karen Surface and brother James Maki. He was preceded in death by his parents. Memorial service will be held Sat., December 4, 2010, 1:00 PM at Pacific Bible Church in Ilwaco with a reception following.
