Long Beach resident Carson Steele Sacks, 75, died peacefully on December 22, 2010 in Vancouver, Washington. The son of John and Dora (Knuth) Sacks, he was born in Martin, South Dakota on September 29, 1935. The family moved to the Peninsula in June of 1945 where Steele graduated from Ilwaco High School. Following high school Steele joined the US Army and while stationed in Alabama he met and married his wife Billie Jean Burke on August 20, 1955. The couple resided in Alabama until moving back to Long Beach in 1963. Steele purchased a cranberry farm which he operated for 47 years up until the time of his death. In recent years Steele enjoyed traveling to Montana and California where he visited relatives. He took pride in his bog and enjoyed the friendship of fellow growers. Survivors include his son Lane Sacks of Long Beach; daughter Tanya Sacks and son-in-law Joe Camp of Vancouver, WA; and his sister Lois Becken of Dayton, Washington. He was preceded in death by his wife Billie Jean and his son Brett. Private services will be held at Penttila's Chapel by The Sea in Long Beach with burial following at Lone Fir Cemetery.
