Long Beach resident John J. "Jack" Donovan, 70, died January 2, 2011 in Ilwaco. The son of Michael and Mary Donovan, he was born in the Bronx, New York on December 19, 1940. While attending high school he excelled in sports and was a all-star baseball player. In years past Jack had graduated from college and worked for the Seattle Department of Transportation in their engineering department. He then operated a popular restaurant near the University of Washington. Jack ended his career by working for Boeing Aircraft where he was an aircraft designer, his specialty being three dimensional designs of various components. Twelve years ago Jack moved to the Peninsula to enjoy retirement and be near family. He was an avid fisherman and in past years a successful golfer on the amateur circuit. Jack also wrote and performed music, enjoyed quality time with his family, sporting events, and walks with his beloved canine companion Rosia. He was a member of the Catholic church. Jack is survived by his daughter Barbara Kirby and son-in-law Kurt Kirby of Long Beach; grandchildren Kady Kirby of Long beach and Kolby Kirby of Ellensburg, WA; sister Mary Donovan-Masoner of Des Moines, WA; brothers Mike Donovan of Wichita, Kansas and Pat Donovan of Seattle; and numerous nieces and nephews. Memorial service will be held Saturday, January 15, 2010, 3:00 PM at Penttila's Chapel by the Sea in Long Beach with a reception following at the chapel.
