Alice R. "Bobbie" Borchers, 93, passed peacefully on June 20, 2011 at her Long Beach residence after a lengthy illness, in the care of her faithful care-givers. The daughter of Albert and Helen (Donohue) Borchers, she was born in St. Louis, Missouri on July 17, 1917. Bobbie lived a full and adventuresome life. In years past she played shortstop on a women's semi-pro softball team which toured Japan and The Philippines in 1938. Later, during World War II, she served in the motor pool of United States Army in the European Theater with her best friend June Hasty. In the ensuring years Bobbie operated her own chiropractic practice in Southern California, coached softball and was employed and retired from the US Veterans Administration Hospital in Long Beach, California. Forty nine years ago she and June relocated to the Peninsula. Bobbie continued her many interests including gardening, stained glass, tile-work, volunteering and collecting and displaying mementos from her many worldly travels. Along the way Bobbie and June were instrumental in ensuring that a young lady by the name of Betty Jarrell was able to complete high school and attend college. Bobbie and June stayed active in Betty's life and her family survives including "son" Robert Tobey of Garden Grove, CA; "grandchildren" and their respective spouses Karen Knudson of Olympia, WA, Robert Tobey of Lansing, MI, and Richard Tobey of Annadale, VA; and seven "great-grandchildren". They will miss her presence and the many Christmases shared together. A celebration of Bobbie's full life will be held on Saturday, July 23, 2011, 10:30 AM at Penttila's Chapel by The Sea in Long Beach. A reception follows at the chapel. Her guestbook is available at www.penttilaschapel.com.
