EUGENIA METRA, M.D. Klipsan Beach resident Eugenia Metra died in Ilwaco on September 30, 2011 having achieved her 100th birthday while a patient in Ocean Beach Hospital. Eugenia was born in Latvia on September 21, 1911. As a child she lived through the Russian revolution and World War I. During Latvia's brief period of independence (1918-1940) she completed high school and attended the University of Latvia, graduating with a degree as a medical doctor. During this time she met and married her husband, Klavs Metra who was also a physician. To this marriage was born children Gunars and Mara. Eugenia's life was interrupted by World War II when the family fled to Germany, afterwards immigrating to America in 1949. She and her husband both were employed as contract physicians by the United States Navy on the Pacific island of Guam. Returning to the States in 1953 she and her husband settled in Tennessee. Following her husband's death in 1978 and her retirement, Eugenia moved three times to be near her daughter until arriving on the Peninsula in 2005. Eugenia enjoyed classical music, opera, gardening and embroidery. She traveled widely in the United States and Europe. Survivors include her son Gunars Metra of Nashville, Tennessee; daughter Mara Pecins of Ocean Park, Washington; grandson Max Pecins; granddaughter Melanie Pecins; and three great-grandchildren.
