Former Ilwaco resident Dorothy M. Smith, 89, died March 13, 2012 in Canby, Oregon. The daughter of John and Dora (Montag) Vaughn, she was born December 18, 1922 in Pasadena, California. Dorothy grew up in Sweet Home, Oregon and was a 1940 graduate of Sweet Home High School. On July 25, 1942, she married Maxwell D. Smith. The couple resided in Klamath Falls, Oregon where Max completed his education at the Oregon Technical Institute. In 1953, they moved to Ilwaco where Dorothy was a wife, mother and homemaker. She and Max opened and operated "The Time Shop" jewelry store in Ilwaco for a number of years. Later Dorothy was employed as a waitress at Red's Restaurant in downtown Ilwaco before becoming office manager at Dr. John Campiche's medical office in Long Beach for over 20 years until retirement. Dorothy was a long time member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Seaview. Over the years she enjoyed bowling with leagues at Hilltop Bowl and also was an avid golfer at both Long Beach and Surfside courses, competing as a member of the "Winewackers". She also enjoyed gardening, cooking and mostly spending time with family who will cherish the memory of this special lady. Dorothy is survived by her sons Don Smith and wife Kathy of Bellingham, WA, and Michael Smith of Long Beach; daughter Diane Moore and husband Jerry of Long Beach, and Debbie Millbrooke and husband Tom of Canby, OR; ten grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grand-daughter. She was preceded in death by her husband Max who passed in 2005. A memorial service will be held at the Peninsula Church Center in Seaview on Saturday, March 31, 2012 at 2:00 PM with a reception following. Graveside rites of Christian burial have been held at the Ilwaco Cemetery.
