Vernamae Carroll

March 10, 1924 — July 4, 2012

Vernamae Carroll, 88, of Ocean Park, passed away July 4, 2012, at home in Ocean Park, WA, in the house her husband built. She was born March 10, 1924, at home on the farm in Skamania, to Earl and Ella Marble. She joined siblings Elva, Ernest, and Alice, and when she was 8 years old, gained a little sister, Genielle. She attended school at Maple Flat, a one-room schoolhouse in Skamania County, before going to high school in Stevenson, WA where she graduated in 1941. In 1946, she married W. C. Carroll. They lived at various times in Camas, Pasco, Rose Valley, Trout Lake, and Ocean Park, Washington. After high school she worked for a short time in a nursing home at Home Valley, WA, but through most of her life she was employed as bookkeeper or in other aspects of office work. She also worked at times at the Trout Lake Grocery and at the Tourist Trap in Trout Lake, and for several years sold Fuller Brush products in that area. Her last job before retiring in the late 80s was in the office at Ocean Beach Hospital in Ilwaco, WA, where she worked for about 10 years. Vernamae was an excellent seamstress, having completed a tailoring course, and taught many young people how to sew, through 4-H clubs. She and her husband loved to dance, and helped to found the Dance Club in Trout Lake in the 70s. She volunteered her time to many organizations over the years, from Twin City Saddle Club and Moose Club in Camas, to 4-H school groups in Trout Lake, to taking care of sick friends and family members, or looking after their children, or assisting where she could. She was active in Homemakers and Women's Club, and a member of Rebekahs. She also loved flowers, and found much peace and enjoyment in the garden. She was an excellent cook, happy to fulfill requests for her pot roast or her pies. Her interests were many. She liked animals, was interested in history, read a lot, and loved and appreciated her family deeply. Vernamae and W. C. (Wib to many, Bill to some) went camping, fishing, hiking, hunting, and horsebackriding. They also did quite a bit of trailer travel, especially after her retirement in the 80s. Their first big trip at that time was to Alaska, and they made some wonderful memories. She is survived by her sister Genielle and husband Del; step-son Jack, his wife Karen, Jack's daughters Lisl and Jill and families; daughter Carla, her husband Mike, and their son Matthew; and many loving nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her siblings Elva, Ernest, and Alice, her husband Wib, and her grandson Adam. A memorial service will be held July 21 at 11 am at the Camas United Methodist Church. Penttila's Chapel by The Sea, Long Beach in charge of arrangements. Vernamae's online guestbook may be signed at www.penttilaschapel.com.
