Ocean Park resident Betty J. Winters, 85, died in Ilwaco on October 19, 2012. Betty was born October 15, 1927 in Covina, California, the daughter of Frank and Irene (Headley) Finley. Her parents had met in Sterling, Colorado before moving to California. Betty's family were employed as migrant farm workers and the family moved from California to Colorado before settling in Oregon when Betty was 8 years old and during her youth Betty's family resided in 17 locations. Betty completed the tenth grade but later obtained her high school diploma when she was age 38. In her 50s she attended Mt. Hood Community College in Gresham, Oregon. On June 7, 1946 she and Philip M. Winters were married and established their first home in Dallas, Oregon. Following their marriage, and prior to settling in Ocean Park in 1988, Phil and Betty moved 38 times. She and Phil co-owned and managed many businesses over the years. Betty was a member of the Baptist church and the American Legion Auxiliary. She was also a member of Surfside Ladies Golf Club and volunteered with Ocean Park Eagles. A champion bowler, Betty also loved to golf, garden, read and watch "her" soap operas, wrestling and Star Trek. In addition, Betty was a crossword guru, skilled seamstress, small appliance repairwoman, hockey fan and she enjoyed a good practical joke as well! Betty is survived by sons Ted Winters of Gold Hill, Oregon and Richard (Charlotte) Winters of Eugene, OR; daughter Rebecca Winters of Ocean Park; sister Donna Carr of Cameron Park, CA; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 65 years, Phil Winters; their infant daughter Susan; brother Ivan; and sisters Barbara and Joyce. Celebration of her life will be Sat., October 27, 2012, 2 PM at Peninsula Baptist Church in Ocean Park with a reception following.
