Mildred Malchow

August 18, 1925 — February 9, 2013

Mildred Malchow of Chinook, died February 9 in Lacey, Washington. The daughter of Ed and Nyda Kary, she was born in Aberdeen, Washington, August 18, 1925. She grew up in Ilwaco where she graduated from Ilwaco High School. While working at the Ilwaco Theater she met many of the soldiers who were stationed in the area to guard our shores from the threats of WWII. Al Malchow was the soldier who captured her heart and they were married in Fort Benning, Georgia shortly before he was shipped overseas. She had many long lasting friendships that made her home and kitchen a gathering place. She fixed lunch at a knock at the door, always famous for her Swedish pancakes, pies, and cookies. She loved hats and looked great in them. It was in that kitchen that much work was accomplished on behalf of the fishing industry that was under serious threat in the 60's. She was part of a small dedicated team that helped to develop a plan to save our commercial fisheries from the serious threat of the Russian fleets. She made several trips to Washington DC and helped present the plan to extend our sovereign protection of the resource to 12 miles, becoming the first step in a 200 mile plan. She was active in the Chinook Evangelical Lutheran Church, serving alongside Al, on the Council, and with the Ladies Aide. Her faith was important and was the basis of many events in the lives of her family. Mildred is survived by her daughter Kristine MacDonald of Silver Peak, Nevada; granddaughter Tina Larson; grandsons Brian Rutzer, Stefen Malchow, and Al Malchow; and 6 great-grandchildren. Her husband, Al and her son Larry preceded her in death. A memorial service will be announced at a date yet to be determined. Arrangements by Penttila's Chapel by The Sea, Long Beach. Mildred's online guestbook may be signed at www.penttilaschapel.com
