Mary Louise Newell, 81, a resident of Ocean Park, died in Seaside, Oregon on December 20, 2014. The daughter of Robert and Helen O'Day, she was born in Portland on December 21, 1932. She grew up in northeast Portland where she attended The Madeline Catholic school and where she also attended church. On February 23, 1952 she married Thomas Newell and they became parents of two sons; Robert who was born in 1953 and Steve, born in 1955. Mary was a wife, mother and homemaker. In 1974 she and her husband retired to Ocean Park. Mary was a dedicated member of the Catholic church, attending mass regularly both at St. Mary's Parish in Seaview and St. Mary Star of the Sea in Astoria. She was a member of the Ocean Park Book Club and the Catholic Daughters of the Americas. She enjoyed reading and traveling. She was an accomplished poet and writer, having many of her works published over the years. Mary is survived by her sons Robert (Karen) Newell of Carlton, Washington and Steve (partner Sharla Delfs) of Seaview; grandchildren Stacey Hamilton, Jason Newell; Lindsay Newell and Sadie Newell; five great-grandchildren; and brother-in-law and sister-in-law John "Pink" and Elesa Newell. Her husband Thomas died in 2004. Private family services will be held. Memorials are requested to either the South Pacific County Humane Society or St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church.
