Naselle resident Betty Jo Young, 86, died in Long Beach on January 5, 2018. The daughter of Glen and Laura (Callahan) Griggs. She was born in Shenandoah, Iowa on October 12, 1931.
Betty was a nurse for over twenty years, working in various capacities. Seeking a new challenge, she became a commercial fisherman (woman) with her husband, Kirby. Together, they fished the waters of California, Oregon Washington, Canada and Alaska. Alaska was her favorite location and she had many memories and souvenirs of her time there.
After locating to the local area, Betty worked in fish processing at Chinook Packing, Jessie's in Ilwaco and also Wilson's. She later returned to her nursing roots, assisting others with home health care. She and her husband shared a special bond.
Besides her husband Kirby, Betty is survived by her daughters Betty Jo and Shelly; brother Edwin; sister Marie; several grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents Glen and Laura Griggs; daughter Debbie; sisters Bellie and Sonja; and brothers Eldon and Dee.
Betty requested a private service. She will be remembered by her creed from Scripture, II Timothy: "I have fought the good fight; I have finished the race; I have kept the faith."
