Kirby C. Young

Kirby Clark Young, age 80, died at Circle of Life in Long Beach, WA, where he called home, on September 9th, 2018. The cause of death was natural.

Born January 9^th, 1938, in Lakeport, CA, Kirby was the son of Wilford Albert Young and Wanda Edna Smythe Young. He later lived in South Seattle, WA along the Pacific Coast from Alaska to Monterey Bay before settling in Naselle. He spent his life on or near water as a commercial fisherman and a member of the Pile Buck Union.

Kirby was a registered member of the Tlingit-Haida tribe of Southeast Alaska.

Kirby met Betty Jo Griggs at Morro Bay, CA 1973. They married in Reno, NV December 20^th, 1975 and were happy together until her passing in 2017.

Kirby owned three boats, including “The Quest” a 42-foot fishing boat he owned for 33 years. He sailed her alone, and with Betty for nearly ten years.  He recalled a career harvesting two million pounds of crab, more than 700 tons of tuna, and over 750,000 lbs of salmon.

Kirby served with the United States Coast Guard for a number of years and had been stationed at Cape D.

Kirby is survived by his sister, Karen Rice of Tacoma, stepdaughters, Michelle Bode, and Betty Jo Johnson, a stepson Ed McClure of Naselle, WA and good friend Randy Evans of Naselle.

Kirby has requested that his and his wife, of 44 years Betty's ashes be spread in Morro Bay, CA, a place where they both lived and spent many years fishing out there!
